A West Point graduate, Robert Ransom served in the U.S. Army under then-Lt Colonel Edwin V. Sumner, 1st U.S. Cavalry, 1855-57. He resigned his army post at the onset of the Civil war to serve in the Confederate Army as Captain of Cavalry. By the end of the war, he reached the rank of Major General. He later worked as an express agent, city marshal at Wilmington, N.C., planter and civil engineer.

Robert Ransom, Jr. was commissioned as colonel with the 1st North Carolina in October 1861. he reached the rank of major general before health issues forced his resignation in August 1864. After the Civil War he worked as a farmer and engineer. Warren Winslow was a U.S. representative from North Carolina.

Robert Ransom (1828-1892) was a major general in the army of the Confederate States of America. Ransom was a native of Warren County, N.C., and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1850. He served in the United States army in the Department of Mexico, 1851-1854, at West Point, 1854-1855, in Kansas, 1855-1857, and intermittently in other locations, 1857-1859. He resigned to enter Confederate service. He achieved the rank of major general in May 1863 and retired in late 1864 due to illness. He later worked as a civil engineer and died in New Bern, N.C.
