Born in Paris, Illinois but moved to Clark County in 1825 with his parents, served in the Mexican War, taught school while he studied the law, admitted to the bar in 1850 and started a practice in Marshall County. Served in Congress 1859-1865 and 1871-1875. Moved to Springfield, Ill. in 1869 and started a law practice there.
