William Charles Bonaparte Wyse was a nephew of the Emperor Napoleon, and son of the prominent Irish politician Thomas Wyse. Born in Waterford and educated at Prior Park College and Oscott College, he had an interest in literature, and while travelling encountered the Félibrige literary movement; Wyse became the only foreign member of this movement, conceived to promote the Provençal language and culture. He published numerous works, mostly poetry, and served in several official positions at Waterford, including justice of the peace and sheriff.
