Willoughby, George, pacifist
George W. Willoughby: born in 1914 in Wyoming; Quaker peace activist; World War II conscientious objector; worked for eight years with the Iowa regional section of the American Friends Service Committee, and served as an official with the Fellowship of Reconciliation. In 1958, he took part in the voyages of the Phoenix and Golden Rule, yachts which disrupted atomic testing in the Pacific Ocean. He and his wife, Lillian, travelled to India in peace action projects, and to the former Soviet Union, Europe and Central America. He was a founder of A Quaker Action Group. Lillian Ruth Pemberton Willoughby: born in Iowa in 1916 to a Quaker family; professional dietician; she was an outspoken pacifist, tax resister and advocate of simple living. Lillian Willoughby died in 2009; George Willoughby died in 2010.
