McNeil was a playwright who began writing while serving time in prison. While incarcerated, he joined the Resurgents Group which got men talking about their violence and he began to write plays which were performed first in the prison then outside in the early 1970's. His works include: The chocolate frog, the old familiar juice, and Jack, which was the only play he wrote outside of prison. In 1975 McNeil won the Australian Writers' Guild award for his play, How does your garden grow.
