Patricia McKissack, a native of Nashville, Tennessee is the author of more than one hundred works of historical fiction and biography for children, on the themes of religion and African Americans. Many of these titles were co-written with her husband Frederick L. McKissack (born in 1939), also from Nashville. Both authors were graduates of Tennessee State University. They are the recipients of a number of awards including the Coretta Scott King Award, the Caldecott Honor Award, and the C.S. Lewis Silver Medal Award.
