Douglas C. McMurtrie, bibliographer and historian of printing, served as national editor of the American Imprints Inventory (1939-1942) of the nationwide Historical Records Survey, a Work Project Administration (WPA) project of the Federal Works Agency in Washington, D.C. Mr. McMurtrie, based in Chicago, Illinois, later was the Director of Advertising and Typography for the Ludlow Typograph Company until his death in September 1944.

Douglas C. McMurtrie was a typographer known as an expert on the history of printing. Born in Belmar, New Jersey, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; he later held numerous prestigious jobs in the printing industry, and served as editor for several publications. He wrote books and articles on typography, and compiled bibliographies on several topics, including crippled children.

Douglas C. McMurtrie, the prominent American typographer, bibliographer, and historian of printing, was born in Belmar, N.J. in 1888.
