Born 27 August 1749 near Staunton, Va. Cousin of President James Madison. Graduated from College of William and Mary. Studied law under George Wythe. Professor of Natural Philosophy and Mathematics at College of William and Mary. Ordained minister of Church of England. In 1777 elected president of William and Mary. First Episcopal bishop of Virginia. Died 6 March 1812.

Bishop James Madison was born 27 August 1749 near Staunton, Va. He graduated in 1771 from the College of William and Mary. He studied law under George Wythe. In 1773, he was appointed professor of natural philosophy and mathematics. He was elected president of William and Mary in 1777. In 1784, he no longer taught math and was thereafter the professor of natural and moral philosophy.

Bishop Madison had been ordained a minister of the Church of England. He espoused the patriot cause and served in the Revolutionary War. Madison served on a commission in 1779 to determine the boundary between Virginia and Pennsylvania and did surveys for a map of Virginia (1807). He served as the first bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Virginia. Madison died 6 March 1812.
