John Meade Haines was born in 1924 in Norfolk, Virginia. From 1938-1941 he attended St. John's College in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. After being discharged, he attended the National Art School in Washington, D.C. From 1948-1949 he attended American University in Washington, D.C., and from 1950-1952 he attended Hans Hofmann School of Fine Art in New York City. Wanting to live a life in the wilderness, he left New York City in 1954 for Alaska to live in a cabin he had built. In Alaska, he began his career as a poet and nature writer, publishing his first book in 1967. As a writer, Haines has received numerous awards, and has served as a visiting lecturer at several colleges and universities. For the academic year 1989-1990, Mr. Haines served on the faculty in the English Department at Ohio University, returning to Alaska in June 1990 where he currently resides as of October 2006.
