Ib Spang Olsen has been a commercial illustrator, a school teacher, a full-time writer and illustrator, and a television animator. Among his awards and honors are the Danish Ministry of Culture Award for best illustrated children's book of the year (1962, 1964, 1966), the Danish Society for Bookcraft's honor list (1964, 1968, 1969, 1971), the Illustrator's Prize from the Organization for Friends of Books (1966), the International Board on Books for Young People honors list (1966), the Hendrixen Medal for outstanding bookcraft (1967), the Hans Christian Andersen Medal runner up (1968, 1970) and the award (1972), the Storm Petersen Legatet (1971), and the Danish Book Craft Society Prize (1976).
