Henry Algernon du Pont (1838-1927) was born at Eleutherian Mills near Wilmington, Delaware, the eldest child of Henry and Louisa du Pont and the grandson of E.I. du Pont. In 1856 he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point from which he graduated five years later and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. During the Civil War he was promoted to the rank of Captain and served in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. He retired from the Army in 1876 and became a partner in the firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. In 1879 he was elected president of the Wilmington & Northern Railroad. In 1885 he became a member of the board of directors of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Company. In 1906 he was elected to represent Delaware in the United States Senate. He served on the Military Affairs Committee. In 1916 he was defeated for re-election and retired to his estate at Winterthur, Delaware, where he died ten years later.

After attending the University of Pennsylvania from 1855 to 1856, he enrolled at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and graduated at the head of his class in 1861. By 1864, he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army. He won a Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic efforts at the Battle of Cedar Creek during the Civil War. From 1906 to 1917, he was a U.S. Senator. Du Pont was a staunch Republican and served on many committees in Washington. He was the author of several military reminiscences and family historian. He was also a farmer and had one of the most valuable private Holstein herds in the United States. Du Pont resided on an estate named Winterthur, located near Wilmington, De.

On July 15, 1874, du Pont married Mary Pauline Foster of New York City. Only two of their children survived to adulthood, Henry Francis du Pont and Louise du Pont Crowninshield. Upon du Pont's death on Dec. 31, 1926, his son inherited the Winterthur estate.
