Military engineer and U.S. diplomat. Born in Charleston, S.C., Gadsden was involved in efforts to bring about an economic revival in the South in order to break its dependence on the northern states. He was active in promoting the Memphis Commercial Convention of 1845, serving on several committees and as chairman of the committee on railroads.
