Harrison Schmitt was born in Santa Rita, New Mexico in 1935. After receiving his doctoral degree in geology from Harvard University in 1964, he joined the NASA Apollo program. As a Lunar module pilot and geologist of Apollo 17 he landed on the moon in 1972. In November 1976 he was elected New Mexico Congressional Senator.
