Engineer and educationalist. In 1872 while still stuyding at Glasgow University, Dyer was offered the position of Principal of New Engineering College in Tokyo and played a prominent part in Japan's modernisation. On his return to Glasgow he concerned himself with educational matters, becoming Chairman of Glasgow School Board in 1914.
