From the description of Letter, 1907. (Harvard University). WorldCat record id: 232007497

Putnam (Harvard, M.D. 1870) studied in Europe under Rokitansky and Meynert and became friends with Huylings Jackson. Returning to Boston, he was the first lecturer on nervous diseases ever appointed at the Harvard Medical School; the Department of Neurology was begun with his classes in 1872. That year he also started one of the first neurological clinics in the U.S., at Massachusetts General Hospital, and also established in his own house a neuropathological laboratory. Putnam's interests were wide, and his published papers covered such subjects as psychoneuroses and organic diseases of the nervous system, as well as broader aspects of neurology. He was one of the earliest proponents of psychoanalysis in America.
