English novelist Paul Scott was born in London, and his education was cut short by family financial problems. He served in the British army in India, and later worked for publishing firms. His early novels received mixed reviews; in 1964 he revisited India, where he found the inspiration for The Raj Quartet. These four novels explore the relationship between India and Britain, and found a wider audience after Scott's death when dramatized for television in the 1980s. Critical reinterpretations of his earlier work have been kinder.
