James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart, soldier, was born 6 February 1833, on "Laurel Hill" plantation, Patrick County, Virginia. He died 12 May 1864 and is buried in Richmond, Virginia. Stuart graduated from the U.S. Military Academy (1850); received his commission (1854); and transferred to the Cavalry (1855). He married Flora Cooke, a colonel's daughter, in 1855, and the couple had three children. Stuart became Robert E. Lee's aide (1859) and resigned from the U.S. Army to be commissioned a lieutenant-colonel in the Virginia Infantry and captain of the Confederate Cavalry (1861).

James Ewell Brown Stuart (1833-1864), born in Virginia, entered West Point in 1850, and served on the southern and western borders with the Mounted Rifles and after 1855 was with the 1st Cavalry. He resigned from the army during the Civil War and joined the Virginia milita.He became the commander of Confederate Cavalry.

James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart (1833-1864), Confederate cavalry commander. He started his Confederate service as captain of Cavalry, soon receiving promotions to colonel of 1st Virginia Cavalry, brigadier general, and major general. He commanded cavalry brigade (October 22, 1861 - July 28, 1862), cavalry division (July 28, 1862 - September 9, 1863), and cavalry corps (September 9, 1863 - May 11, 1864) in the Army of Northern Virginia. In May, 1863, he was temporarily in charge of Jackson's 2nd Corps.
