Ford Madox Ford was an English author and editor; both his work and personal life were characterized by controversy, excess, and exaggeration. Born into an artistic family, he grew up cultured and accomplished. He was inspired to become a writer by his grandfather, artist Ford Madox Brown, who illustrated his first book. His early collaboration with Joseph Conrad helped each develop as a writer, and Ford went on to write novels, short stories, travel literature, and criticism. He was instrumental in developing modern literature, and supported such writers as Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and D.H. Lawrence.
