Schaap was born in New York City on September 27, 1934. He earned a B.S. from Cornell University in 1955 and an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University in 1956. He was sports editor, then general editor, then senior editor for NEWSWEEK from 1956-1963, and in 1964 became city editor of the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE. He wrote articles for SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, the SATURDAY EVENING POST, and other magazines. His books include MICKEY MANTLE-INDISPENSABLE YANKEE; PAUL HORNUNG-PRO FOOTBALL'S GOLDEN BOY; AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE OLYMPICS; INSTANT REPLAY (about Jerry Kramer); RFK; and TURNED ON. He also edited autobiographies of Joe Namath, Frank Beard, and Tom Seaver.
