Keyes, Charles Rollin, 1864-1942

Keyes' primary endeavor was to compile extensive information on Iowa prehistory. He served as director of the Iowa Archaeological Survey of the State Historical Society of Iowa from 1922 to 1948.

Keyes grew up in Des Moines, graduated from the State University of Iowa and obtained his PhD from Johns Hopkins University. By 1900 he had worked as an assistant in the U.S. Geological Survey, a Missouri paleontologist, assistant Iowa state geologist and director of the Missouri Geological Survey. From 1902-1906 he served as president of the New Mexico School of Mines. He organized the Iowa Geological Survey which produced 30 volumes of information and edited the Pan-American Geologist. In 1918 he was the Democratic Party nominee for the U.S. Senate from Iowa. Keyes was a prolific writer with hundreds of publications to his credit.
