Goelet, Robert G. (Robert Guestier), 1924-

Robert G. Goelet was a trustee of the American Museum of Natural History, 1966-1974, and its eighth (and last unsalaried) president, 1975-1988. At his retirement he became chairman of the Board of Trustees, then chairman emeritus.

Goelet grew up and attended school in France, where one of his neighbors was Jean Delacour, research ornithologist at the AMNH. Goelet retained an interest in natural science into adulthood; in addition to his positions at the AMNH, he has also served as president of the New York Zoological Society and the New-York Historical Society, and as director of the National Audubon Society. During Goelet's tenure at the AMNH, the Asian Hall and the South American Peoples' Hall were opened, and the exhibitions Ancestors and Gold of El Dorado were produced.
