Moses Hadas, a classical scholar, was appointed a research analyst and liaison officer for the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). After British and Greek troops liberated the country from Italians and Germans in 1944, Communist guerrillas waged a civil war (1944-1949) during which the Greek government received U.S. aid under the Truman Doctrine.
