Samuel M. Steward published under his own name and the name Phil Andros, and worked as a tattooist under the name Phil Sparrow. Samuel M. Steward earned his PhD in writing from Ohio State University, and taught at several colleges and universities. After leaving academia in the mid-1950's, Mr. Steward continued his professions as tattoo artist and as writer. Steward died at age 84 on December 31, 1993 in Berkeley, California.
