John Hawkshaw, F.R.S, was contacted towards the end of 1864 by Mr Larking, the London agent of the Egyptian government, to seek his advice regarding means of improving navigation in the passage of the Nile through the first cataract situated above the town of Aswan, Upper Egypt. Hawkshaw sent a party to survey the area in order to allow him to formulate a plan for the Egyptian government. The John Hawkshaw in question is possibly the civil engineer who lived 1811-1891.
