Angus McMillan arrived in Australia in January 1838. In 1864, after a long career as an explorer and pioneer pastoralist in Gippsland, he was offered the leadership of the Victorian government's Alpine Expedition to open tracks in the mining area of Omeo, Dargo and Matlock.
