English novelist. In 1836 he married Isabella Shawe. In 1840 she bagan to suffer from mental illness, and the next year was committed to a private asylum. Among the friends Thackeray turned to for support was his old schoolmate William Henry Brookfield, recently married to Jane Elton. Thackeray soon made Mrs. Brookfield the object of his displaced affections. Brookfield was too sure of his wife's love to be jealous and too fond of Thackeray not to let her relieve some of his loneliness. Although Thackeray's love had a strong physical element, Mrs. Brookfield maintained that hers was of an innocent, sisterly nature. The relationship continued until 1852, when the couple broke with Thackeray after a more than usually strong protest by Brookfield. The three reconciled several years later, but gradually saw less of each other.
