Born at London District, Ontario. Came to North Dakota 1868, left, returned 1872 as Northern Pacific Railroad employee. In 1876, appointed sheriff of Burleigh County, N.D., also won election as sheriff that year. 1873 wed Mary Ellen Hayes, Brainerd, Minn. They divorced 1887, Mary Ellen died 1899 at St. Paul. In 1890, he married Elva A. Stewart, she died 1922. McKenzie was active in early North Dakota politics, also had mining interests in Alaska. Owned large tracts of land in and around Bismarck, N.D., also owned Bismarck Water Supply Co. Retired from public life in 1922, died in June 1922.
