Hide Profile

Charles Henry Hart was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1847, to Julia Leavey and Samuel Hart. He practiced law for a time, but then decided to devote himself to his interest in American art. He became a noted authority on portraiture, especially the works of Gilbert Stuart. Hart delighted in being able to expose fraudulent attributions. Hart was a noted author, penning a number of books and articles about art. He served as a director for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1882 until 1902. He was also the chairman of the Retrospective American Art exhibit at the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893. He and his committee selected representative American art from before 1876 for exhibition at the fair. Hart died in New York City in 1918.
