Italo Svevo, the pseudonym of Aron Hector Schmitz, was an Italianized Jewish novelist, short story writer, playwright, essayist, and journalist. Svevo, for his distinct originality, sensitivity to the new European currents which dominated his time, wealth of interests and intuitive capacity in the inner probings of man, ranks among the great writers of modern European literature.
