A native of Washington County, Ind., Kimball served with Indiana regiments during the Mexican and Civil Wars, gaining the rank of major general. He was state treasurer from 1867 to 1871, and served in the Indiana General Assembly in 1873. In 1874 he moved to Utah and served as U.S. Surveyor and later postmaster of Ogden.

Kimball, an Indiana native, was colonel of the 14th Indiana Infantry and then a brigadier general during the Civil War. He held several Indiana state offices before being appointed surveyor general of Utah Territory and then postmaster of Ogden, Utah.

Physician and soldier.

Born in Fredericksburgh, Indiana; raised in his native town a company known as the Posey Guards, for service in the Mexican War, which became Company G of the 2nd Regiment of Indiana volunteers, of which Kimball was commissioned captain.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Kimball was practicing medicine at Loogootee, Indiana; served throughout the war rising to the rank of Brevet Major General; elected Indiana state treasurer in 1866 and 1868 and a member of the state legislature in 1872; 1873, appointed surveyor general of Utah; postmaster of Ogden City from 1879 until his death.
