College, 1836-1873 and 1877-1882; son, of Robert Gibbes Barnwell (1761-1814) and Elizabeth Hayne Wigg Barnwell; husband of Eliza Barnwell (1807-1891).

Beaufort County, South Carolina plantation owner, attorney, S.C. State Representative (1826-1828), U.S. Congressman (1829-1833), president of South Carolina College (1835-1841), and U.S. Senator (1850). Robert Woodward Barnwell married his second cousin, Eliza Barnwell (1807-1891) with whom he had 13 children. Barnwell's principal country residence was Woodward Plantation, but he also owned Cotton Hope (part of the old True Blue Plantation), Straban, and Bull's Point Plantations. Barnwell's only brother, William Hazzard Wigg Barnwell was an attorney and rector of St. Peter's Church, Charleston, South Carolina, and had a residence near Laurel Bay Plantation (which had been their father's principal country home).
