Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke became a barrister in 1626. He was elected to the Long Parliament in 1640 and took a leading part in the impeachment and attainder (1641) of King Charles I's chief minister, the Earl of Stratford. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642, Whitelocke sided with Parliament against the Royalists. Whitelocke became a commissioner of the Great Seal in 1648 and was an influential figure in Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth regime. As ambassador to Sweden in 1653-1654, he negotiated a treaty of friendship between England and Sweden. He was dismissed from the government in 1655 and his reputation for moderation saved him from prosecution after the restoration of Charles II in 1660.

Bulstrode Whitlocke was an English laywer and statesman, and played an interesting role in the English Civil War. He was born in London, and educated at Oxford, although he failed to take a degree. He was called to the Middle Temple, practiced law, and was elected to Parliament. He played an active role in the English Civil War, using his influence to support Parliament, but remaining true to his own beliefs, sometimes opposing the Protectorate. Still, he remained a counselor to Oliver Cromwell, and had great influence in Richard Cromwell's government, but acted with such moderation and sense that he was largely forgiven when the monarchy was reinstated.
