Variant namesAuthor and journalist; native of Marion, S.C.; in 1924, graduated with BA from Judson college (Marion, Ala.); 1924-1925, studied at the Pulitzer School of Journalism at Columbia University; attended Anderson College; 1925-1934, worked as a reporter for New Orleans Times-Picayune, while her future husband, Bruce Manning, worked for a rival newspaper, the Item; Bristow wrote mysteries and published four novels before finding great success with the "plantation trilogy" that carried two Louisiana families from pre-Revolutionary days to World War I: Deep Summer (1937), The Handsome Road (1938), and This Side of Glory (1940); all three novels became bestsellers; also author of Tomorrow is Forever (1943) and Jubilee Trail (1950); died in New Orleans, 1980.

She was a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune while her future husband, Bruce Manning, worked for a rival newspaper, the Item.
