Obstetrician and gynecologist, 1904-1993. Professor and head of department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Washington University School of Medicine, 1940-1971. Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Maryland at Baltimore Dept. of Medicine, 1971-1982. Allen was the first scientist to isolate progesterone in the ovary, for which he was awarded the Eli Lilly and Company Award in Biological Chemistry in 1935.

Dr. Willard F. Allen joined the staff of the University of Alberta in 1948, originally teaching in the Department of Chemistry. He served as president of the Canadian Association of University Teachers during the 1969-1970 term. In 1971 he was appointed Associate Vice-President (Academic) having responsibility over various faculties, schools and institutes of the University, as well as oversight of the registrars office, the libraries, research and student award offices, extension, summer session and evening credit courses, radio, television and technical services. He retired in 1984.
