Alfred Tennyson Dickens, son of Charles Dickens, migrated to Australia in 1865. Another son, Edward Bulwer Lytton Dickens came to Australia in 1869. Alfred bought a partnership in a stock and station agency in Hamilton, Victoria, but four years after his wife Jessie was killed in a carriage accident in December 1878, he left to join the Melbourne branch of his brother's agency.
