William Augustus Muhlenberg was an evangelical clergyman in the Episcopal Church, known for his innovative and influential education theories. Born into a prominent Philadelphia family, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and was ordained in the church. He held several ecclesiastical posts, first in Lancaster, and later in New York. While rector of St. George's in Flushing, Long Island, he founded St. Paul's College; although financial woes caused the school to close, it served as a template for later institutions such as the Groton School. He also founded St. Luke's hospital in New York City, and a philanthropic community on Long Island Sound.
