Oodgeroo Noonuccal, previously known as Kath Walker, was an indigenous Australian author, lecturer, and activist. Charismatic and tireless, she played a central role in Australia's 1967 constitutional recognition of Aborigines. The unprecedented success of her book of poetry, We Are Going - the first book of poetry published by an indigenous Australian - made her the best-selling Australian poet. She continued to work for Aboriginal rights and recognition, and, in 1988, dissatisfied with the role of the Aborigine in Australia's bicentennial, she adopted the Noonuccal name, Oodgeroo.
