Conrad, Joseph, 1857-1924

Joseph Conrad, a major British writer, was born in Poland and became a British subject in 1887. After a twenty year career at sea, he published his first novel, "Almayer's Folly" (1895), successfully launching his writing career.

Joseph Conrad, the novelist and short story writer, was born December 3, 1857, in Berdiczew, Podolia, Russia (now Poland) and became a naturalized British citizen in 1886. Serving in the British Merchant Service in 1878-94, he traveled to Africa, Australia, India, Indonesia, and the Orient. Upon return he worked full time as a writer from 1895 until his death from a heart attack on August 3, 1924, in Bishopsbourne, Kent, England.

Conrad's work marks a shift from the novel as popular entertainment to the novel as high art. His characteristic themes of alienation and thwarted heroism and his preoccupation with individuals in remote places have had a continuing impact on writers.
