Henry Richards Luard (1825-1891) was born in London on 17 August 1825, and educated at Cheam and King's College, London. He became resident at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1843, and obtained a college scholarship in 1846, and fellowship in 1849 (B.A., 1847; M.A., 1850; B.D., 1875; D.D., 1878). Luard was junior bursar at Trinity, 1853-1861, and vicar of Great St Mary's, Cambridge, 1860-1887. He became university registrary in 1862. Luard made contributions to the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the master of the rolls series and the Dictionary of national biography . He died on 1 May 1891.
