Caleb Mills (1806-1879) was born in Dunbarton, N.H. and graduated from Dartmouth College (Ind.) in 1828. In 1833 he began teaching at the newly opened Wabash Teachers Seminary and Manual Labor College (later Wabash College). Mills is best known for his theories and activities concerning public education in Ind. He married Sarah Marshall in 1833. Their son Benjamin Marshall Mills served in the 108th Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company C. He later served as a first lieutenant in the 49th Colored Infantry, Company F. After the Civil War he attended Wabash College.
