John Ernest Randall collected fishes on Onotoa Atoll, Gilbert Islands in 1951. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii in 1955. During his career he worked as a research assistant professor at University of Miami's Marine Laboratory, a zoology professor at University of Puerto Rico, director of the Oceanic Institute, curator of fishes and senior ichthyologist at the Bishop Museum, and a marine biologist at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology of the University of Hawaii.
