Committee of Concord, Mass., appointed in 1889 to arrange for gift by town of "some appropriate ornament" for twin screw gunboat "Concord." Committee consisted of John Shepard Keyes (Chairman), Charles H. Walcott, Edward J. Bartlett, Samuel Hoar, and Edward Waldo Emerson. Committee proposed bronze statuette of Daniel Chester French's Minuteman statue (full-size original of which was dedicated at Concord's North Bridge in 1875). Secretary of Navy B.F. Tracy accepted proposal on behalf of Navy Dept. Sculptor Daniel Chester French prepared plaster statuette and mold for model, which was.

(Cont.) cast in bronze at Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Mass. Gift was presented in 1891, final report of Committee printed in 1891-1892 annual municipal report. U.S.S. "Concord" (1890-1929) for which statuette was prepared was second in series of five ships by same name.
