Nichols, Clarina Irene Howard, 1810-1885

Newspaper editor and woman's rights leader, Nichols campaigned for women's equality in Vermont, Kansas, and California. She is credited with the incorporation of several women's rights provisions in the state constitution of Kansas. Journalist, lobbyist and public speaker involved in all three of the major reform movements of the mid-19th century: temperance, abolition, and the women's movement. Born in Townshend, Vermont, Clarina worked for a newspaper in Brattleboro, Vermont where she married the newspaper's publisher, George Nichols. In 1854 Clarina moved to Kansas; she died in 1885 in California.
