Hannah Atkins was the first African American to be elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives (1968-1980) and she served as Assistant Director of the Department of Human Services (1983-1987), Secretary of State of Oklahoma (1987-1988), Cabinet Secretary for Social Services (1988-1991). She was active in civil rights, women's rights and children's rights.
