The Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company is an amateur theatre group begun in 1960 in Hyde Park. Their first production was The Gondoliers, performed in November of that year. Since then, the Company has produced an annual fully-staged Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, as well as occasional concert performances. The Company has also hosted a number of community sing-alongs, often commemorating the centennial of a particular Gilbert and Sullivan work. The mainstays of the company's repertory have been Gilbert and Sullivan's larger, better-known works, with The Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe, Ruddigore, The Gondoliers, and The Yeomen of the Guard in heaviest rotation. The Sorcerer, Patience, and Princess Ida have also each received several performances, and with the exception of Thespis, all of the duo's collaborations have been produced in some form by the Company.

While not technically a University of Chicago organization, the group has been affiliated in various ways with the University throughout its history. At its founding, the group was sponsored by Adventures in the Arts, an organization affiliated with the University High School. The relationship lasted until 1983, when the University's Department of Music assumed sponsorship. As a result of these partnerships, proceeds from performances have gone to support the University High School and the Department of Music performance program. Performances take place in Mandel Hall on the University Campus (and for a while at the Beverly Arts Center also), and the University Chamber Orchestra provides musicians and a conductor. The Company was also a participant in the University's Summer Nights performance series in Hutchinson Courtyard.

The Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company's amateur status extends to crew, production staff, musicians, and the Board of Directors. Auditions are open, and performers have included University students, faculty and staff, and persons from around Chicago and beyond. Incorporated in 1964, the organization operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
