The Textiles department was founded in 1899. Originally in the basement of Holladay Hall, the college offered courses such as carding and spinning, weaving, textile designing, and textile chemistry and dyeing. In 1901 the North Carolina General Assembly appropriated $10,000 toward the construction of a new textile building. This structure, Tompkins Hall, resembled a textile mill of the period and was completed in early 1902. The department continued to expand and relocated to Nelson Hall in 1940. The Textiles Library was created in 1944, with Rachel Penn Lane as its first librarian. It was originally located in the main library, but it relocated to Nelson Hall in 1945. The name was eventually changed to the Burlington Textiles Library after 1954, when Burlington Industries funded its expansion. Groundbreaking for the new College of Textiles building, which includes the Burlington Textiles Library, was on Centennial campus on the 17th of May, 1988. In 2013, it was subsumed into the James B. Hunt, Jr. Library.

The Institute of Textile Technology transferred its library to North Carolina State University's Burlington Textiles Library when it moved its operations to the NCSU Centennial Campus. The Burlington Textiles Library had maintained for years a vertical file for quick reference. After the merger of the two libraries, the Burlington Textiles Library transferred the historically valuable materials from both collections to the NCSU Libraries Special Collections Research Center.
