Author and scholar Brander Mathews was born in New Orleans to a wealthy family, and educated in France and New York, earning a law degree from Columbia. A financial panic ruined the family fortune, allowing Matthews to begin a literary career. He wrote articles and criticism and translated French plays before finding success with plays of his own; in conjunction with his critical works, he became America's leading expert on drama, and one of the most influential critics of his time. He had an active social life and was friends with many of the key literary figures of his day. He also wrote essays, novels, and short stories, worked for social change, and was the first American professor of dramatic literature, at Columbia.
