Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), from whose works these drawings were selected, was a distinguished French naturalist and a member of the Academie Royale des Science, the Academie Francaise, and the Royal Society London. His extensive work in paleontology, zoological geography and animal psychology helped to create the intellectual milieu within which the majority of naturalists worked until the appearance of Darwin's work.
