Garden, Alexander, 1730-1791

South Carolina plantation owner, physician, and naturalist, after whom Karl Linnaeus named the "Gardenia." Alexander Garden married Elizabeth Peronneau (d. 1805). Garden remained loyal to the Crown, although his son, Alexander Garden (1757-1829) supported the colonial cause in the American Revolution. Garden was vice-president of the British Royal Society and died in London in 1791.

A native of Scotland, Alexander Garden arrived in South Carolina in 1752 and began a medical practice in Prince William Parish, later settling in Charleston. He became well known for his contributions in botany and other natural sciences, and he corresponded with many eminent men of science of his time. Dr. Garden was a friend of Richard Bohun Baker (1736-1783), owner of Archdale Hall and other South Carolina plantations, and was physician to the Baker family and their slaves. When the Revolutionary War began, Garden, a Loyalist, left South Carolina for England. His wife was Elizabeth Perroneau (d. 1805).
