Lowell Coggeshall received his M.D. from Indiana University in 1928. After his internship at the University of Chicago Hospital in 1928-1929 he became an instructor in the Medical School in 1930 and assistant professor in 1934. In 1941 he left Chicago to become professor of epidemiology and chairman of the Department of Tropical Diseases in the School of Public Health of the University of Michigan.

In 1944 Dr. Coggeshall gave up his position at Michigan to join the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy. He served as chief medical officer at the Marine Corps Barracks at Klamath Falls, Oregon, then used as filariasis rehabilitation center. Upon being discharged in 1946 at the rank of captain he returned to the University of Chicago as professor and chairman of the Department of Medicine. He was named dean of the Division of Biological Sciences in 1947 and Frederick H. Rawson Professor of Medicine in 1949. He was appointed vice president for Medical Affairs in 1960, which he held until 1969.

He went on to become a special advisor to the Dean of the Biological Sciences Division from 1947 to 1960; and Vice President for Medical Affairs from 1960 to 1966. He was also a University Trustee from 1962 to1965.

Dr. Coggeshall took a very active part in the fields of public health, public service, charitable foundations, and medical affairs beyond the confines of academia. From 1924 to 1944, on a leave of absence from the University of Michigan, he served as Medical Director of Pan-American Airways in Africa; in 1956-57, on a leave of absence from the University of Chicago, he served as Special Assistant for Health and Medical Affairs to the Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. In 1958 he was a member of the United States delegation to the World Health Organization, and in 1959 he served on the International Development and Advisory Board.
